We are all dreamers in this world, especially us poets. We often see a society that is more transparent than to the human eye. Released in 1971, the song “Imagine” by John Lennon spoke of peace, togetherness and living free. The song has become a classic ranked by Rolling Stone Magazine #3 in a list of its top 500 greatest songs of all time. The inspiration of the song was of course from a poem that appeared in Yoko Ono’s 1964 book titled “Grapefruit”. Lennon declared the song as good as anything he wrote for The Beatles. In studying the song’s lyrics below you grasp onto a feeling of hope that speak of the problems back in the 70’s but also speak as an antidote for the problems of today as war, the economy and racial differences continue to plague our society. The song starts off with “Imagine there’s no Heaven” or “No hell below us” as we try to live for today and enjoy every facet of time we breathe because our yesterday’s can’t be recaptured and tomorrow is not promised especially with all the problems we encounter and have yet to solve.
